History of Mereside Village Association

In 1979 some interested villagers set up a Village Association for the purposes of collecting sums of money to provide a play field and a village hall for the local community. The Association adopted Rules on the 15th October 1980 and registered itself as a Charity under Charity number 281945. The Association's Committee initially consisted of Mr J.A.R Chrisp - (Chairman), Mrs S.J town (Secretary), Mr D.S Cumbridge (Treasurer), Mr T.G Owen, Mrs H.R Bernard, Mrs B Sallabanks, Mr W.C Paul and Mrs J.G Lyon Committee Members.

Membership of the Association was soon extended to junior members under the age Village Hallof 18 years. A 3 acre field at the end of Marriotts Lane was purchased with monies raised by the Association and from a grant from the Huntingdonshire District Council on the 11th October 1980 at the price of £5500.

A temporary village hall consisting of two mobile school classrooms put back to back with the partitions taken out was soon erected by the villagers themselves on the new land. The land was put down to grass and mowed so as to provide a playing field for the use of the villagers and the annual Strawberry Fayre (is held on the Village land) on the first Sunday in July.

The temporary village hall soon became redundant because it did not meet modern hygience and Health & Safety standards and had to be demolished after approximately 10 years. 8 acres of land belongingin to Jack Wright, a local farmer, became available for purchase by the Village Association and the Village Trustees took an Option to purchase this land and explored with the Huntingdonshire District Council the possibility of realising a Planning Gain if 3 acres of land could be released for residential development thereby allowing the land over which the Option to purchase had been taken to be sold, in part, to a developer. After a torturous procedure of Planning applications, refusal and an Appeal, Planning Consent was granted for part of the site to be used for residential development and 3 acres of land now comprising Drovers Close was sold off by the Village Association after exercising the Option to purchase the extra land. Sufficient money was freed up in the Planning Gain to enable a purpose build village hall with modern facilities, including sports changing rooms and showers, to be built and opened in July 1999. The Trustees at this time consisted of - Mr J.A.R Chrisp, Mr D.S Cumbridge, Mrs S.E.S Papworth, Mr C.P Tingey and Mr Raymond Smith.

The Association has been privilaged to have had a great many valuable officers and Committee Village Hall 1Members over its years who have made the development of its village facilities possible. Successive Committees have added improved facilities such as an extended car park, a pathway to Changlers Way and a children's playground. Currently, the current Committee is obtaining finance to provide a multi use games area which will require an expenditure of £58,500 of which £38,500 has already been committed by way of grants. The village hall is available for hire for weddings, parties, dances, musical performances, meetings and social activities. The sports field is available for people to play on and use as a recreation area and also available to hire by football and other sports teams. The hall has the benefit of a Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003 which enables the hall to be used to its fullest extent for a great number of licensable activities.

The hall can be hired for various functions, rates are held in the Advertise part of this site
